Island Hopping in the Dutch Wadden Sea: How It Works

Dreaming of visiting several Dutch Wadden Islands in one trip? Island hopping is a unique way to explore Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. It may sound simple, but due to tides, sandbanks and changing weather conditions, direct ferry connections between the islands are limited. With good planning, however, island hopping is absolutely possible – and an adventure in itself.

How does island hopping work?

The Wadden Sea is a dynamic and constantly changing landscape. Tides create shifting channels and sandbanks, making the area ecologically valuable and fascinating to travel through. This UNESCO World Heritage site is not just a route between islands, but a destination in its own right.

Ways to travel between the islands

The most reliable option is via the mainland. You travel from an island back to the mainland and continue to the next departure port. This takes more time but is possible year-round.

During the season, there are also direct island-to-island connections. From Texel to Vlieland you sail with De Vriendschap, from Vlieland to Terschelling with Rederij Doeksen, and in summer (around high tide) from Terschelling to Ameland and Schiermonnikoog.

For a more adventurous experience, you can sail with the Eilandhopper on historic sailing ships. Prefer everything arranged? Then choose an organised island hopping trip including transport and accommodation. Watertaxis are available for flexible or last-minute travel, though at a higher cost.

Island hopping requires flexibility, but rewards you with an unforgettable journey through wind, water and wide horizons.
