From October 1 to April 1, it is possible on Terschelling to drive on the beach with a motorized vehicle. Driving along the beach, especially near the high-water line, originates from traditional beachcombing, which has been practiced for centuries by the local population.
Beachcombing has been done on foot, by bike, horse and cart, and later with off-road vehicles. A portion of the materials that wash up on the beach daily can be reused. Not only usable materials are collected, but also, with growing environmental awareness, large amounts of waste are removed from the beaches with the help of (environmental) beachcombers. The collected plastic is then processed into sustainable products in the jute factory.
Besides the opportunity to collect items with motor vehicles, the interests of other beach visitors are also taken into account. Many visitors come to Terschelling for the space, peace, quiet, and beautiful beach experience. Representatives, such as the Landrover Club Terschelling, have made considerable efforts to ensure that motorized beachcombing can coexist with other recreational activities. Therefore, driving on the beach is deliberately limited in October and during the Christmas holidays to between 6:00 PM and 10:00 AM. During the day, driving is not permitted between posts 8 and 18.
A permit from the municipality is required to drive on the beach. Beach drivers are expected to respect walkers and animals, and speed is limited. Several beach trips can be booked via vvvterschelling.nl.
