De Boschplaat is a beautiful and unique protected nature reserve on the east side of Terschelling. It is one of the few places in the Netherlands with rugged, unmanaged nature. The area is very varied, with a large salt marsh on the Wadden Sea side, a wide beach on the North Sea side, many rifts, dunes and scrubland with a small pool here and there. This variation adds to the variety of bird species that we can expect. The Boschplaat is an important breeding area for birds, which is why the area is closed to visitors from March to August 15. The path along the drift dike (north side of the Boschplaat) is accessible all year round, and from there there is also plenty to see. Today we will take a walk through this special area. In the spring you can quietly hear the beautiful birdsong of species such as Skylark, Stonechat, Bluethroat, Nightingale and Grasshopper Warbler. We also have a chance at species such as Northern Wheatear, Spoonbill, Yellow Wagtail and Hen Harrier. In autumn and winter we see species such as Brent Goose, Barnacle Goose, Marsh and Hen Harrier, Sand Lark and Snow Bunting. And with luck, we also always have a chance of a Short-eared Owl! We walk back on the beach, where we can see different species of gulls, terns and waders, and maybe even a gannet. Who knows, we might even see a seal or a roe deer.
