What is the best way to make an insect hotel in which the bees develop best? Honey bees stay together all year round in a bee colony, solitary bees, bumblebees and wasps do not. A solitary lady bee lays her eggs in a nest corridor and dies; her offspring do not come into the world until after a year. In bumblebees and wasps, only the queen hibernates and will not lay eggs again until spring to form a temporary colony. They feed the larvae with nectar and pollen.
