In September and October, the autumn migration is in full swing, huge numbers of birds are flooding into our country. With a bit of luck and in the right place, this could be an experience to remember! South of Midsland on Terschelling is such a special place: the Strieper salt marsh and polder. With the rising tide, there are often hundreds to thousands of birds, a fantastic place to watch them peacefully with the telescope. We start about two hours before high tide, so that the birds are 'pushed' towards us by the rising water. Hopefully this way we can view them nicely and from a fairly close range. Species that we can expect here on the mudflats/marsh include: Golden Plover and Gray Plover, Curlew and Whimbrel, Turnstones, Black-tailed Godwit and Bar-tailed Godwit, Greenshank, Knot, Sandpiper and Spoonbill. Also inside the dikes near Striep, on the polder, there is often a lot to see. For example the Teal, Wigeon, Barnacle Goose, White-fronted Goose and Brent Goose. We may also see some groups of Redwings or Fieldfares passing through, or a harrier flying over. During the trek it is always a surprise what you will encounter.
