"Toer" is what the people of Terschelling call their lighthouse, and it has been a trusted beacon for maritime vessels for centuries. The burning fire in the top of the Brandaris projecting light, is also called "fjoer"... "Fjoertoer" is a walk that takes you past beacons of fire, on your way to Brandaris.
Fjoertoer takes you along the impressive nature of the island, through the polder, forests, dunes and of course across the beach. Local artists create surprising and distinctive fire and light effects which point nocturnal hikers in the right direction. Of course campfires are also part of the experience. The second largest village is located near the centre of the island. Old Terschelling can be found in the shopping area around Meslânzer Church. This cosy village, with its rich history, is a beautiful place to enjoy spending a several hours. Shops of all shapes and sizes nestle behind the facades of the many national listed buildings. There are too many to mention here, so we suggest you take your time for a nice look around. Alternatively, go dancing, relax on a terrace, or enjoy some good food, as there’s more than enough choice.
