Willem Barentsz

One of the most famous Terschellings, the explorer and cartographer Willem Barentsz, has been immortalized in stone in Formerum. He and his crew wintered in 1596/1597 on Nova Zembla. Unfortunately Willem Barentsz himself died in this perilous adventure. The entire story of Willem Barentsz and his crew can be seen in detail in the Het Behoudt Huys museum, named after the hut the men had built on Nova Zembla. The story is also described in the book Sporen in het Zand.
