Uitzichtpunt Jan Thijssensdune

In the middle of the vast nature reserve of the Boschplaat and the Dark Sky Park lies the Jan Thijssenduin, an impressive dune that towers above all other dunes at a height of 14 metres. This special viewpoint offers a breathtaking view of the island and the surrounding landscapes. From the top you have a beautiful view of the Boschplaat. In addition, you can also see the diversity in the landscape: oak and birch forests, drifting dunes, the North Sea beach, heathlands, salt marshes, polder and the mudflats. From here you can also see the Brandaris, the ships that sail around Terschelling and, in clear weather, even the neighbouring Ameland or the Frisian Wadden coast. The first birdwatching post of the Boschplaat was once located on the Jan Thijssenduin, consisting of simple canteens. These posts have now been moved, further along the Boschplaat. The dune is still a beautiful vantage point to overlook the Boschplaat, experience the bird migration or enjoy the beautiful starry sky during the dark. The Jan Thijssenduin is best reached by bike or on foot, via the cycle path on the Boschplaat. The last part to the top of the dune can only be reached on foot via an unpaved path. Motorists can park their car at the beginning of the Boschplaat, from here it is approximately 1.5 kilometers walk to the dune. From the last bus stop in Oosterend, the Wierschuur, it is approximately 2 kilometers to the foot of the dune. Once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with one of the most beautiful views in the Netherlands.
