De Streken

Behind the dike near Oosterend, on the edge of the Wadden Sea, lies the unique landscape artwork *De Streken*. This 150-meter-long wooden installation extends into the mudflats and moves along with the rhythm of the tides. Via a narrow bridge, you reach the heart of a flower-shaped structure that opens at high tide and closes again at low tide. In the center, a circular bench invites you to pause and appreciate the view, the sounds, the scents, and the vastness of the Wadden Sea area. Here, you experience how dynamic and vulnerable the landscape is. **A Shared Love for Landscape** De Streken was developed in 2015 by Marc van Vliet, inspired by his years of artistic exchange with Joop Mulder, founder of Oerol. Their shared love for the landscape resulted in a tidal object, compass rose, and meeting place all in one. The work marked a new phase in the dialogue between art and landscape and became instrumental in shaping the philosophy of Sense of Place. For Joop, De Streken was an iconic work: a place from which you can experience the Wadden landscape intensely. Joop passed away on January 10, 2021, but his vision lives on in this special project. Last edition in 2026 For islanders and visitors alike, De Streken has become a regular meeting place. A compass rose with a QR code at the location tells the story of De Streken, even when the artwork is not present. However, due to rising costs, it was uncertain whether De Streken could return. Thanks to a fantastic crowdfunding campaign, the tidal object is returning one last time to the dike in Oosterend (accessible via the Perkweg, in Oosterend). The artwork can be viewed from June 10 to September 6, unless the Wadden decides otherwise. A farewell that is simultaneously a tribute to Marc, Joop, and the landscape that always sets us in motion. "If you aren't afraid of your dreams, they aren't big enough" - Joop Mulder.
