De Milieujutter
The sea doesn't just wash up beautiful treasures. Plastic, fishing nets, and other waste also end up on the beach with the tide. As a beachgoer, you can help keep the beach clean by picking up this waste. This is also known as 'environmental beachcombing'. The De Milieujutter Foundation organizes excursions where you can help clean the beach and dunes. As a non-profit organization, the foundation is committed to a clean Terschelling. Contact De Milieujutter to make an appointment. Prefer to just beachcomb? Boxes with garbage bags are available at the beach access points. Of course, you can also bring your own bag. Be sure to collect plastic, glass, fishing nets, and other waste that does not belong on the beach. Small pieces of plastic and fishing nets can be harmful to animals and nature. Is your bag full? Then place it at a beach access point or at a beach post at the foot of the dunes. Send the beach post number or location via SMS or WhatsApp so that the waste can be collected. Together, we ensure that the beach remains clean for people, animals, and nature.
Important to know
Not everything that washes ashore needs to be cleared away. Wood without protruding nails, stones, and dead animals may be left where they are. You can gather large pieces of debris together at the foot of the dunes. Pay extra attention during the breeding season. Shore-nesting birds sometimes use washed-up material for shelter or orientation. Therefore, between May 15 and August 15, search as little as possible at the foot of the dunes and in young dunes, and do not disturb nests.
