Near the village of Hee are De Kooibosjes, managed by Staatsbosbeheer. This area is approximately 2.5 hectares in size and consists of wet, barren grasslands bordered with alder girths. The name probably comes from a duck decoy that was once here. In earlier times these wet and barren areas were used as hay meadows and were called mieden. The countries are characterized by their large plant and herb richness. De Kooibosjes are the only remaining “mieden” on Terschelling. The grasslands are mowed once a year and special plant species grow, including the Spotted Orchis (Dactylorhiza maculata), the Swamp Violet (Viola Palustris), Water Trifolia (Menyanthes Trifoliata) and Star Sedge (Carex Echinata). De Kooibosjes can be found along the cycle path, just past Camping De Kooi on your right.
