Bunkers on Terschelling

You see them all over the island, traces of the Second World War that draw the landscape: the bunkers. On the beach, in the forest, as a holiday home, you see them in all kinds of places. A few of these impressive concrete structures have been restored to their original state. Here you step back into an eventful history.

The Tiger Stellung
West Terschelling played an important role in World War II. Here you will find the Tiger Stelling, a bunker complex where the battle in the air war over the Wadden Islands has been made visible again. In the visitor center, models and a film provide a lively picture of the function of this 'radar theorem'. With the bunker card you walk past the impressive buildings on the site and there is an instructive booklet especially for children. Tickets for the visitor center (without a tour) are available at the visitor center without a reservation for 5 euros.

Guided tours
The guide takes you to the heart of a number of refurbished bunkers. Here you experience life in a bunker and you hear about the threats in the war. Only 16 people can take part in the tours. So book a ticket quickly.
The tours last two hours and are less suitable for small children. The excursion requires a lot of running gear.

Spend the night
Bunkers can also be found elsewhere, on the middle and east of the island. In the dunes of Formerum, on the beach and in the woods near Hoorn. For example at the Folkshegeskoalle, the only still Volkshogeschool in the Netherlands. There are even dormitories built on the foundations of bunkers and there is a special tower room.

Walks
A special Bunker walk has been made with which you can explore the area around West-Terschelling. You also get tips for discovering other bunkers on Terschelling. Walk this route and stay one or more nights on our beautiful island? View what's available and make a reservation right away. You can order the bunker route online here (NL).
