Terschellingers have been active in merchant shipping and voyages of discovery since the Middle Ages. Later, many found employment in whaling, merchant and passenger ships, pilotage and salvage. Unfortunately, many seafaring islanders found a seaman's grave in the natural disaster. On the edge of West-Terschelling stands the Seamen's Monument: a bronze statue of a sailor's wife, looking out over the sea, who waits in vain for the return of her husband or son. Islanders are still active in salvaging ships or in rescues at sea. In 'de kom', the easternmost part of the harbor on West, you can see the salvage and rescue ships.
