Pop-up Exhibition in the Tonnenloods

Pop-up Exhibition in the Tonnenloods
A Preview of the Future Anyone taking a stroll through West-Terschelling this Christmas holiday should definitely step inside the Tonnenloods. The striking building by the harbour – once the domain of buoys, ropes, and maritime tales – is temporarily opening its doors for a pop-up exhibition that offers a first glimpse of what will be on display here in the future.

Birds, Shells, and a Touch of Island History
Visitors can enjoy a selection from the bird and shell collections of the Centre for Nature and Landscape (CNL). From tiny beach finds to impressive seabirds, the collection showcases the richness and uniqueness of the island’s nature. The display is compact yet tasteful – just enough to spark curiosity about what is still to come.

Although the other halls of the Tonnenloods are still under construction, a digital preview of the future presentation is already available. Expect interactive elements, historical context, and modern ways to bring Terschelling’s nature to life.

A Building with a Story
The Tonnenloods itself takes centre stage. Built in the era when maintaining sea buoys was a crucial task, the building still breathes a rugged maritime atmosphere. The current renovation gives it a new purpose while preserving the character that makes it so typically Terschelling.

Opening Hours
The pop-up exhibition is open daily during the Christmas holidays from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Note: Closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Admission is free; visitors may make a voluntary contribution to support the further development of the Tonnenloods.

Looking Ahead to 2026
If everything goes according to plan, the grand official opening is scheduled for late May 2026. At that time, all halls, interactive installations, and stories will come together in a fully-fledged visitor centre where nature, cultural history, and island life meet.

Until then, the pop-up exhibition offers a delightful teaser – well worth a visit, and a perfect excuse to escape the winter chill.
