On Easter Monday, Baroque Archipel will give a performance of the Hohe Messe by Johann Sebastian Bach, conducted by Gerrit Maas. The beautiful Westerkerk in West-Terschelling forms the beautiful backdrop for an intimate concert.
Baroque Archipel is an Utrecht choir and orchestra led by Bach specialist Gerrit Maas and consists of highly advanced amateur singers and instrumentalists.
The Hohe Messe is regarded as Bach's magnum opus. He wrote the work towards the end of his life as a kind of musical testament; a sample of his abilities. For a large number of parts of the mass, he reverted to works he had previously composed, giving the listener an overview of the composer's entire career in one work. Bach's early, daring experiments are featured, as well as his later, more intellectual style. The Hohe Messe is full of virtuoso parts for the singers and the instruments in the orchestra: audiences and performers will never be bored!
